HISTORY:

The "Lehrerhausverein" (Teachers’ House Association), an organization representing the interests of teachers, was founded in 1885. The construction of the building  "Lehrerhaus" made it possible for young teachers to find temporary accommodation in Vienna during their professional training.

The grand opening took place on May 14, 1906, under the patronage of Emperor Franz Josef, in the presence of Archduke Friedrich, Mayor Karl Lueger and other prominent figures in Viennese society.

At that time, the corner house, partly built in Art Nouveau (Jugendstil)  and Historicism style, had a café-restaurant (today this is the BILLA Supermarket), a bowling alley in the courtyard building and also the magnificent "Josefs-Saal", which has been re-opened since 1974 as the "Vienna English Theatre".
