History
The "Lehrerhausverein," founded in 1885, was an organization representing the interests of the teaching profession. With the construction of the "Lehrerhaus," young teachers received temporary accommodation in Vienna during their training. Under the patronage of Emperor Franz Joseph, the building was ceremoniously opened on May 14, 1906, in the presence of Archduke Friedrich and other high-ranking personalities of Viennese society.
The corner house, built in Art Nouveau and Historicism styles, originally offered a café-restaurant, a bowling alley in the courtyard, and the magnificent "Josefs-Saal," which has housed the "Vienna English Theatre" since 1974.
